The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (Carbon Reduction Commitment) is the UK’s new carbon emissions trading scheme that will start operating in April 2010. Many businesses previously unaffected by emissions trading are likely to be subject to the CRC.
Carbon Reduction Commitment will currently cover all organisations whose electricity consumption is:
- through half-hourly meters is greater than 6,000MWh/yr
- equivalent to a electricity bill of £500k p.a.
UK parent companies need to record all UK energy consumption for all UK subsidiaries from fixed point sources, e.g. electricity, gas, on-site diesel generators but not vehicle fuel. This information is then used to calculate CO2 emissions and report annually to the government. For every tonne of CO2 emitted, they will need to purchase units from the government at £12 per tonne in the first 3 years. After three years they will be purchased at auction. Any shortfall or excess can be traded on an open market after the initial auction period is over.

We can arrange a full Energy Efficiency Survey on your commercial property, to help you understand building energy efficiency, this could include a Mechanical and Engineering Services Installation Report complete with recommendations on cutting carbon emissions. An Energy Performance Certificate can help reveal building energy efficiency, as can an Air conditioning audit or Air conditioning Inspection.
