Display Energy Certificates (DEC certificates), which show how efficiently a building is operated, can be an important tool in helping to reduce both running costs and carbon emissions in commercial buildings. They were introduced as part of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)1 and are required in buildings larger than 1000m2 that are occupied by public authorities and frequently visited by the public. Over 40,0002 DECs have now been issued.
The government is consulting on changes to DEC Certificates sometime in 2010/2011, the favoured option is to introduce DECs for commercial buildings on a compulsory basis as soon as is practically possible and enable voluntary take up of DECs in the meantime. the consultation period runs between 2nd March and 25th May.
